Tree Inventory from Point Clouds: Easier Than Ever!

Tree detection and automated solutions are becoming increasingly popular among point cloud users. A quick scroll through LinkedIn will reveal articles on automatic forest tree segmentation and toolkits from scanner manufacturers designed to support users in creating tree inventories. From its inception, PointCloudScene has featured a semi-automatic toolkit for tree extraction. Now, with our improved methods, we offer an even better experience for extracting detailed tree semantics!

Trees in PCS from TLS dataset

PCS development consistently focuses on semi-automatic solutions to offer users the best possible experience, with the understanding that automatic results often need verification. While impressive automated tools for extracting tree parameters do exist, our tool is designed with a different aim. We provide a fast, user-friendly solution that allows users to perform tasks with just a few clicks, ensuring both quality and efficiency. The tree extraction toolkit in PCS uses a rule-based approach, storing trees in point SHP or point FDB tables and using attributes to retain tree parameters. This approach allows users to align with an existing database schema or easily create their own. PCS offers a one-click and five-click solution:

  • The one-click solution allows our users to click anywhere on the tree, and the software will try to identify the tree and pre-define the parameters
  • The five-click solution allows the users to click on the key points, and the parameters will be pre-filled based on this user input

The extraction toolkit enables users to numerically adjust tree parameters or move small markers within the extraction window. Users can quickly modify the diameter using trunk and crown views for visual adjustment. The 3D view displays support vectors as parameters are modified, providing immediate feedback on the attribute representation. The tool can extract parameters, including trunk diameter, crown diameter, tree height, and offsets for the crown and trunk diameter points. This allows users to visualize these later or use them for modelling purposes.

Who do we recommend this toolkit for? It’s suitable for everyone, from freelancers to governmental organizations, looking to create tree inventories. PCS provides a comprehensive range of vector extraction tools, making the tree extraction toolkit a valuable option. It’s a game changer for anyone wanting to build a database from point cloud data. Compatible with all types of sensors—whether TLS, MLS, or SLAM—this toolkit will help you achieve your goals more efficiently and accurately!
